Exclamation Upgrading Advice Needed!

I’m coming in to a bit of money soon and I want to upgrade my current rig. At the moment I have a p4 2.4 GHz 1gig ram and 128 geforce 4 graphics card. I got a £400 budget. In short to get the best possible speed do I go for amd or Intel? I was the fastest power for doom III and games like that. Do I go for this new fangled pci express? I have no clue. General advice would be helpful. I’ve heard amd's arent that fast and overheat. I just want the fastest CPU motherboard combo. Thanks
