ATI Radeon 9600se performance.

I prefer to have my computer running as perfectly as it can go. Now, I am not a 'HUGE' game, but I do like to enjoy Counter-Strike (1.6) every once and a while. I have 1GB Ram, 3200+ AMD processor, and of course, the ATI radeon 9600se vid card.
When I play counter-strike, and I type in " net_graph 3 " it dosplays a little blob of text in the corner of the screen which displays the FSP (frames per second). Now, I and into video production, editing, etc. I know that a video with 30+ fps is fairly high quality. On tv they have a 30fps rate and its seems like its real. I get around 70fps on counter-strike(cs) and I was wondering if there is anyway I can tweak the performance to make the card run as fast as possible. Mainly because I have Counter-Strike: Source, a newer cs gamebased off the Half-Life 2 engine for those who don't know, and in that game, I get around 20-30 fps. I actually notice the difference. Its like watching a fast slideshow... glitchy. Now, I have the resolution on CS to 1280x1024, and source is on a lower res. Anyone know a way to tweak it besides overclocking which voides the warrenty? thanks.

Well, basically you can turn down the pretties (anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering) and drop the resolution even further. I don't use ATi cards (I know, that's just being stupid and stubborn) so I don't know if they have any command switches you can use that only work with ATi cards. But really, to get rid of the choppiness, you will have to ditch some quality.

yeah...

I like to keep my resolution as high as posible (who doesn't), and I want to know if there is any other way of performing other than lowing resolution.

everyone's pc should ge able to get a steady 100 fps on cs. cause it's a old game that doen'st require much stress on the system.

your video cannot handle that much stress based on the resolution of your cs:s settings.

mantaining high FPS relies on the CPU, video card, memorys, and harddrive.

you have a fine CPU. highly recommend amd 64 for gaming.

your video card will not do the job. with your resolution size it only puts more stress on your video card. i hope you have the current ati or omega drivers for your card also. i have 9800 pro i only use 1024 resolution with medium settings. yet my fps range from 50-100 depending on the gunfights and etc.

if your planning to play source it recommend a:

ATi brand: 9800 pro or higher

Nvidia: FX 5950 or higher

1gb memory is good enough

harddrives (recommend a raptor 10,000 RPM, yet its no need) to me HDD is a HDD. yet there are gamers who recommend a raptor than a regular HDD

if you turn down the size of your resoltuion you might see some slight improvement.

type these in the console and see if it helps

cl_smooth 0

r_3dsky 0

fps_max 999

thanks :)

Ok, I have a 200gb HD. So that won't be a problem. I have pretty much singled it all out to the fact that my video card has 128mb of ram, and not 256mb. My fps on cs 1.6 i around 100 usually, but my cs: s is poor and around 20-40.

As for those tweaks you mentioned, they helped a little bit. I am now in max resolution 1280x1024 and it runs at aproxx. 25-30 fps. Do you have any other consol tweaks I can do? I seached on google to find some consol tweaks for cs: s, but I was unsuccesful Could you perhaps tell me some more, or give me a link to a site which I can find some more tweaks? Thanks.

when i was referring about the hdd. i wasn't talking about the size yet the difference in speed and performance.

you will not see any more improvement unless you drop a better video card or you bring down your resolution and settings.

you can max out the resolution size for cs yet maxing out in source is totally different.

those console commands i just gave you isn't tweaks. yet just to enable or disable any unnecessary things in the game.

i also hope your not using any programs that takes up too much resources such as (zone alarm firewall, nortons or any etc)

thats all i can say for you.

Ok, well thanks.

All I have running when I play cs:s is occasionally AIM, and my AV software (light on resources). I have now definately singled it down to my video card. Thanks again.

Well I run a Radeon Mobility 9600. 1 Gig RAM. Pentium 2.8Ghz HT. 60 Gig HD 7200. And I run CS:S 1280x800 full everything. I get ~50fps.
