I need help with putting a second hard drive in my computer

I got an old hard drive from my friend and i need some help!! what i did was format the hard drive which i think i shouldnt have done that! But i think i had no choice. when i went to go see what was on it; it kept saying something about a windows protection or something of that nature. But i recently had to do was put a new copy of windows xp pro on my computer so when my computer starts up i have a choice of selecting the old copy or the new copy. when i hooked up the hard drive i got from my friend into my computer it is fine until i get to the screen to where i can pick from the old or new copy of windos XP Pro. when i pick one of them it freezes and i cant do nothing! so please help me out here. I would really appreciate it.

Thanks!!!
