This is a bit speculative, but im going to say the ATI cards. Whatever you can afford for 300. Just the nvidia are better if your going to SLI two cards, but i cant personally stand the noise, and the nvidia have higher power requirements than the ATI.
Basically
If you prefer a good card, with low noise, and low power drain, pick an ATI. Aim for the ATI X800 XL. Its the best for the money.
If you prefer a good card, and arent worried about noise and drain, and are thinking of SLIing at a later date, Go for a 6800GT. no point going for a 6600 cos when you SLI two of them, you get the performance of ONE 6800GT anyway.

p.s Yes i am aware of ATI crossfire. Which hasnt appeared yet. In THEORY you could buy one XL now, and another one later, but you can only use an ATI branded mobo for crossfire, so at present its a little unlikely...
