Hi.

Someone may be able to help get that existing drive working again if you give us some more information:

Drive make/model
What error message(s) do you get when installing XP
What did you do wipe the drive
Does your BIOS even recognize the drive

And anything else you can think of that may be useful.

My boy screwed it royal then he used a dod wipe on it,,, completly wiping it, igo to install xp 3/4 of the way through it says it's missing a config file,,,,
then it takes me though a loop of fix mode ect , reinstall same thing,,, so i figured a new hard drive and maybe it would work.

AMD Athlon XP 1800 plus
Socket A MSI 6380LE K7T266
(Twin) 512Mb PC-2100 266MHz DDR SDRAM (1024 total)
60 GB UDMA/100 7200 RPM harddrive
XP Home
300w ATX..

Can i use a Seagate 200 GB 7200 SATA. model no. ST3200822
what is the difference between ATA, UDMA, SATA, ect and what can i use?

if this site is your computer HERE
You can not use a SATA drive , use the ATA or UDMA drive.
Not sure if the motherboard will accept a 200g drive or not but would suspect yes, could be wrong.

You would have to have XP SP1 to use a 200g hdd.
Go HERE
for bios update info, but be sure the site is the correct motherboard !

The xp i have is pre sp, so that should be no problem, i tried again to load windows, it goes through drive set up and formatt then it starts the windows loading, as it's copying files it comes up with that certain files and dll's cannot be loaded because they do not exist or are not fully loaded. thus sending it back through again,,,,it says that there could be windows xp cd damage,,,, ((( there is none, i protected it, i.e. no scratches ect )))
first file it couldn't or wouldn't load was twain.dll,,, any ideas?

This is my board

You can not use a SATA hdd. If you have a pre SP cd , you can not install on to a 200g hdd. ( You may be able to make 2 100g partitons and be ok, I do not use XP so not sure) Not sure of max hdd size for pre SP.

1) goto hdd manufactures web site and download and run their hdd test utility.
2) buy a cd drive cleaning disk and use
3)do you have a MS XP CD or a recovery cd ?. Have you use the CD before ?
4) what is a "dod wipe" ?

Just found out i can only go to 160 Gb for hd,the board won't support anything higher, and a dod,,, it was done with a program called DBAN
Daricks Boot And Nuke, it wiped everything out....
wondering,, what would be the better choice,
a new HD, and try with my disk that says it may be damaged which i don't see any scratches and alike, or buy xp pro with sp2 already in and try to load it on the drive.

My best advice first would be: Varying by the drive manufacturer, you can get formatting/disk utilities from the manufacturers website. These should help get your Current HDD working if its fixable.
