What does grounded mean?

Im just about to install a new mother board, ram, and new processor. I keep hearing about how being grounded is all important during the installation. I know that its so static doesnt build up but....how do ya do it?
And any other tips regarging the installation of anything would be appreciated.
Thanks

The idea of being 'grounded' is to allow any static in your body to escape to 'ground' or earth via a metal conductor rather than having it take the shortest route through the component that you are holding, which could damage it. The method I use is to leave the PC plugged in to the mains socket but the mains socket SWITCHED OFF. This maintains earth continuity between the PC and the mains earth circuit without the PC itself being live and dangerous. I then touch the bare metal of the PC case before handling or fitting an internal component. You can also buy a purpose-made wrist strap which clips on to the PC case so that you are earthed all the time (as long as the case itself is also earthed through the mains socket).
