Question Right Ram?

Hey,

Well I have recently bought 512MB of ram (1 stick) but I am not sure if it is the right one that will work on my pc. I have a Sony Vaio PCV-RX850. The Ram stick has a sticker that says-

"512MB 64x64 PC3200 CL3 DDR" will this work? Please help me out...

according to Sony ( Your boards specs here ), click marketing specs to open .pdf, your pc has PC 2100 DDR ram, if you were to put the the PC 3200 ram in it will run at PC2100 speeds ....... with ram mixed like that the lowest common denominator works.

Yes it will work but will be crippled to pc2100 speeds, you might like to try exchanging it for some pc 2100 ram which would probably get you a cash refund because of the $ value difference

Is it that it will work but jsut wont go worth the 512MB like it is supposed to? If this is it, bout how much might it actually use?

So long as the PC3200 stick is backwards compatible to PC2100 it should work fine. What will happen is the stick of PC3200 which normally runs at 400Mhz will instead run at the same, slower speed as the PC2100 stick (133Mhz).

It will not effect the capacity (512MB). Since your computer has always had a Front Side Bus of 133Mhz, you won't even notice the PC3200 module is running slower then it can.

If the above is still confusing, read this:
So long as the PC3200 stick is backwards compatible to PC2100-- it will seem exactly the same as if you just popped another stick of PC2100 in there. You will get the full 512MB.

EDIT: no offence meant to 'ANZAC_ELITE' by me jumping into this thread.

Depends on your motherboard. Check through the BIOS. If you can select the amount of shared memory used, then you can.
