Transfer File From PC to Laptop

Just got a new laptop and want to transfer a few files from my old PC. All I have is a blue ethernet cable. I have put this in to both computers but nothing is recognised.

Can anyone help me?

Is your cable a patch lead or a crossover lead? By the sounds of it I'm guessing it is a patch lead. To connect pc to pc direct (without a hub) you will need a crossover lead. Also ensure both pc's are in the same work group.
