What is a chipset

is it required to have a computer working
what does it do.

There are an absolutely crucial component of modern mother boards (and/or graphics cards .ect). Basically, they control the flow of bits to/from peripherals, memory, and the CPU.


See the link below for a simple diagram of the control flow through an Intel chipset. The two blue squares are the North bridge and South Bridge chips that make up the "chipset":

does this come with chipset?

and is this an ok mother board and cpu for an all around computer.
like it can run games nice and smooth and also good at surfing web and running programs

Mate, all m/boards have a chipset, they wouldn't work otherwise.

The chipsets on that board are VIA. (see the picture of the board, it shows both Via Northbridge and Southbridge chipsets and gives chipset numbers, NB Via P4M800, SB Via VT8237)

As to the board itself I have no knowledge of it personally, I suggest you google it and look for some reviews. After a glance at the board on Tiger the first thing that springs to mind is that it supports 800 fsb and the Celeron only runs at 533 fsb, therefore using that cpu you are not using the board to it's full potential. If you can afford it go for a 800 fsb P4 cpu.
