What Is Meaning Of Ac97 In Ac97 Codec Sound

hi pals

there are lot of soundcard drivers. it is called as AC97 Codec Sound.

as follows

AD1881 AC 97 Codec Driver
CS4299 AC 97 Codec Driver
ALC100 AC 97 Codec Driver
ALC201 AC 97 Codec Driver

so i want to know the meaning of AC97 in that. i think AC means that Audio Codec but what about 97.

pls clarify me.
