Processor Suggestions

So with my new project that I'm starting I'm looking at replacing the current AMD K-6 processor. I've got a new Western Digital drive on the way but was wondering about the processor as the current one is a tad slow. I'm not looking at spending a huge ammount of money but I still want something that can actually get out of its own way. I've been looking at 2 processors so far, the AMD XP and a Pentium 4 Processor 506. I see this one on ebay for the P4 HERE . Anyone have a suggestion? Thanks!

If I could, I'd rather see you steer away from that particular P4... but, more on that in a minute. First I'd like to make sure that you are replacing your motherboard and RAM as well. That K-6 was a cool CPU, but there is nothing it could run on that would accept a P4, and probably not even the newer AMD CPU.

But, about the P4 on ebay, it runs on a 533 MHz bus. All the P4's that run on a 800 MHz front-side bus (FSB) will run circles around that CPU, mainly because of memory bandwidth. So if you can find a 800MHz FSB Pentium 4 for a similar price, that would be a step in the right direction. But that's just my opinion, and I want you to know that I'm having a hard time recommending a P4 CPU to anyone right at this moment. And that says something, because I am a big Intel fan.

Anyway, I gotta get some shut eye, so maybe one of the other people can give you some AMD info to chew on. Good luck, and good night.

Ok, thanks curtybob. I looked into the P4 and that's getting up there in price. I'm not really wanting to spend a whole lot of money but around $100 for the processor since I'll have to put some more $$$ into a new board and ram. If anyone has suggestions on any of this I'd appreciate it.

I still havent chosen which processor and board to go with yet but was considering overclocking. Anybody have some more input on that? I know when I look at my sytem info its saying that its running at 502Mhz but I can only find info on 233Mhz AMD K2's. Think my system is already overclocked?

It was probably a K6-2 which ran stock at 500 MHz. It's remotely possible that it was an OC'ed K6, but that's a fairly large OC.

I can't really give you specifics, but look into an AMD Sempron CPU (socket 939) and a nice motherboard to match it. Then grab some Kingston ValuRAM (I have pretty good luck with their cheap stuff) that runs at DDR400 (PC 3200).

The Semprons are about as cheap as it gets, and still could be upgraded to the latest and greatest. Plus, I know a guy on another forum that got a sub-$100 sempron to run at 3 GHz on stock cooling. It was faster than an FX55 in most of the benchmarks he ran.

Looked more into the overclocking, what happens when you set the clock speed too high? It seems like people say that the system wont boot and you know that its too high of a setting. But if it wont boot how do you change it? Also I saw a way on adjusting your jumpers? What exactly are they and anybody have an idea on how I can overclock with my K6? Sorry for some of the noob ?'s.

Decided to just buy an all new dell with all the goodies. Tell me what you guys/gals all think about this setup.

I'll be adding a 17" NEC monitor but as far as interals go just a NetGear PCI slot wireless adapter. Let me know if this sounds good or not. Thanks.

Well overall its a good computer. You should be happy with it. If you're a gamer the video card won't be great, but otherwise you have a good computer.

Ok, got it all ordered and it should be to me on the 15th. What do you do for a break in on the new parts? I use Prime95 for the Mersenne prime part but I know it has a stress test along with it. Should I use that or should I maybe try and use Burn In Test? Thanks.

It doesnt matter now as I recieved the computer on Friday!! So far it has been amazingly fast and I have loved every minute of it.
