Question Recommendations for Dell Poweredge 1400 Server

Hi all,

Just bought a PIII 800 MHz Dell Poweredge Server 1400 with 512MB memory and 18 GB hard drive for £40. It has CD ROM and floppy drive. I was wondering if anyone recommends any DLT tape drives I can buy for it??

Another question I would like to ask everyone is can it be upgraded to a Pentium 4 without changing the other hardware parts??

Your comments will be appreciated.

Regards,

DaveC2003

Hi DaveC2003,

If you are looking for DLT tape drive then I guess best place to look for is ebay...you would want DLT 4000 with 20 Gig Native and 40 Gig compressed backup capability......Please keep in mind that used DLT drive are not pricey but the tape itself doesn't not come cheap, my humble suggestion would be external DVD DL / RW for backup.

A2, you can't upgrade the PIII to P4 without changing the motherboard and CPU.....best upgrade for your PIII would be additional 1.5 gig of Ram

Cheers

Thumbs up

Thanks for your input Snow Monkey, I'll have a look at motherboards and CPU for it and DLT tape drives.

Any recommendations on the best motherboards and CPU for the server and where I can get it?? Can't seem to find any suitable for it.

Dell Server are not the best servers for hardware upgrade....what I mean is that It will cost you a lot more to upgrade that server rather then going out and buying another used and faster server....That's unfortunate fact about Dell Server.

Do you want to use that computer as server of Desktop machine ? As I mentioned before...most optimum upgrade for your server would be memory upgrade.

Cheers
