Question Power Supply Help

I have a emachines T6520 and i am ordering a nvid 7900gt, which means i need to buy a new power supply. I am planning on buying an ultra X-finity 500w PSU. I do not know anything about power supplies so bare with me. I was reading something that told me that i would have check carefully on which PSU i buy. Does this mean i have to have the exact amount of ports to connect all the um... connectors or are most computers built to fit most power supplies. I really need help because i dont feel like ordering something i cant use. help please
