Please save me some money (on a new PC configuration)

Hello, I'm planning on buying a new desktop PC, and here's the hardware list I assembled:

AMD Athlon 64 X2 4400+, socket AM2, 1024Kb c., 2.3GHz

HDD WD 160GB, SATAII, 7200rpm, 3.0 GB/s, 16MBc, SWD1600YS

DDR2 2048Mb (2x1024) PC6400 SuperTalent, T800UX2GC5, 800MHz

MB GIGABYTE M57SLI-S4 Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce 570-SLI 6

SAPPHIRE X1800GTO, 256MB GDD3, DVI, PCI-ex


Please tell me if I put some incompatible components in this, or particularly if I could change something that would make it cheaper but not much less efficient

I don't see any incompatible components, but that's not really my area of expertise. As far as making it cheaper. I always just keep a good eye out on eBay, Buy.com has some good rebates, NewEgg, TigerDirect, eCost, places like that always have good deals.

Have a look at local PC suppliers, do any use that motherboard...and the parts you want - eith that will confirm compatibility or maybe they goive you a decent price/ Often a "built" system is cheaper than bits - although you do't have the joy of searching for a bargain.
Over time parts become outdated so by buying a complete system you stand a better chance all bits are similar-age and up-to-date drivers etc..........
just a thought...
..I keep putting-off the day for change.... hoping Linux will become mainstream, but it's still too geeky for me/ most punters, still. I gave Ubuntu a try 2-years ago but it was hard work...what was good was excellent but never got .PDF or Java installed and printers are a bit of an issue unless Canon/HP......

It's not an exceptional HDD capacity? - 250G is becoming common, surely.
Here in the UK Vista is getting close to half the cost of a modest PC-build.....so maybe Microsoft is trying to help the dealers shift complete PC's?
Is that Chip dual-core? That seems to be the future to reduce heat, although I understand programmes need to be written with that in mind, so some new purchases may be required to get full effect.....however, I have no experience of this, sticking as I do to somewhat tired-old kit.
