Cool Help Please . . . .LCD question

I have a Laptop that is working fairly well with one exception. I can only use it with an external monitor because the only thing I see when looking at the attached LCD is a soft hue. It appears to be backlit but I can't see anything else. I have tinkered with the settings with no luck. When I go to the sytem hardware and look at the details for monitor, it shows both the primary and secondary monitors to be working properly but obviously it isn't since I cant see anything except a soft light.

Is this something that can be repaired or am I looking at replacing the entire LCD panel?

Dell 5150
SXGA - 15"
Windows XP-Home

Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried pressing the Fn/F8 key combination to toggle back and forth between the laptop's display and an external monitor?
