HDD Platter Scraches

I have a Maxtor MaXline Plus II 250GB SATA/150 HDD witch has failed. Apart from sending it of to a data recovery company i decided to take it apart and look at the damage. I found that the head had created some rather prompt scratches on the platters.
I don't have any IMPORTANT data on the HDD but there is stuff that I would like to recover.
Does any one have any ideas?
