New HDD

I Currently have a Maxtor 27gb drive as my boot drive for my PC. I bought a WD 160gb EIDE drive to replace it. I used the tools that came with the new drive to format partition and copy the old files from my original boot drive to the new one. However, with the new drive in place my system doesnt recognize it as a boot drive. The bios sees the new drive and gives the correct information but the system eventually errors out on boot and tells me I dont have a system boot disk avaiable.

System:
ASUS A7n8x-e deluxe
bios 1013
2gb ram
ATI video card x1600

any help will be appreciated.

What operating system are you using?

Have you set the jumpers up correctly and made the new hard drive the primary master?

Jumpers are set to master and the new hard drive is the only harddrive connected. It is on the Primary controller.

If you revert to the small original disc, does it still boot?

When you formatted the drive did you give it a drive letter?
and has that become "C" now the small disc is replaced?

Isn't XP "funny" ? - - - in that if you change something (like the MB or HDD) Microsoft will think you are cheating them out of money and it refuses to work?.....is changing the HDD a cause for new registration?
(This confusion and restrictive practice is one very good reason for me sticking with earlier sw - like Win8SE at least until Ubuntu sorts out two remaining niggles (out of three I noticed about a year ago).

I have the machine currently running on the original disk. There are some errors like bad sectors, which is one of the reasons for replacing it. Using the WD utilities I wasnt asked to give it a drive letter, but I was asked if I wanted a the partition to be bootable. I cant get the machine to boot into windows with the new drive. Bios sees the new drive but it gets to a point in the boot progress and tells me I dont have a bootable system disk. I have tried formatting the drive into multiple small partitions to see if the size has anything to do with it. No luck. Still stuck at this point.

What software did you use to copy the old hard drive files onto the new?

I used the utility that came with the WD drive. Its WD Data Lifeguard.
