Looking to replace pc

Hi,

I'm looking to replace my destop. I have had it 4 years now, and it was a hand-me-down, so is actually several years older. All the peripherals have been added/replaced - printer, scanner, monitor, etc within the last year, so, I only really need the cpu.

I was hoping for advice on what spec to look out for. I don'y play games, but do a fair bit of video copying and editing and would also like to have a fair bit of space to store files. At present my pc can only copy smallish video files to disk (cetainly not whole films) and cos its so old I can't even d/l some software, because they won't work.

Any ideas?

Alan

Hi,

Follow-up - I have no idea what is a good or sufficient spec. Memory size, especially ram, goes over my head, and no idea what cards I will need.

Main purpose again is to copy/burn/edit video and have plenty of space for files. Won't be gaming. An aquaintance found something they thought suitable on Dell, or somewhere, for under £300 (lost the details now). It seemed to good a bargain to me, but what do I know? If you're in the know, it is easy to upgrade memory etc., I guess to a suitable spec, without spending £100's more on the next model up.

Thanks again
Alan

First you have to decide how much money you're willing to spend. Then we can help.

It would be pointless for someone to recommend a machine that is completely outside your price range.

Looking to replace pc - price range

Hi,

Price range - well I only really need the pc - none of the peripherals. If I can get one for around say 300-400, all well and good, but I don't really want to spend say £650 if I don't need to, especially if a cheaper model does all I need.

Thanks again,

Alan

for that budget you could get a good mid tower p4 dual core 2 system or athlon dual core with 1 gig maybe 2 gig of ram 250/300 gig hard drive dvdrw and a good graphic card. ebay do some good pc systems made from companys on there that build them and fully tested..and most online shops can do you a system build of your specs minus peripherals. its a matter of choice..if your not a gamer go for the pentium ..as athlon cpus are more for gaming i feel. i would rather have a pc built than buying all the parts and doing yourself..as if you have a system built and theres problems,,the company has to rectify it or replace. and as i said before..most companies that build your spec will test burn in for a cuple of days to make sure its all ok.
