Video DVD reading problem in MATSHITA DVD Player

Can anyone help me to understand how Video DVD works on MATSHITA DVD +RW UJ-857G ATA DEVICE. I have a Dell's XPS laptop which is having Matchita's DVD device. The problem with this plaer is that the tray doesn't comes out when I press eject button in stead it itself pulls any large DVD/CD but this doesn't works for small DVD which is normally used on Handycams. I am not able to read Handycam's video DVD in this player. Can anyone guide me how will this work??

Thats a very old dvd player, I use to have a pioneer that did the same. It wont work with the smaller disks though.
