you could try plantronic headset mics. they use usb 2 and you dont need any drivers, xp detects it. also they use digital signal processing, which makes them crystal clear. if you want a decent crystal clear sound from a mic or headset. you have to pay abit extra but its worth it.
http://www.headsets.uk.net/ if you want desktop mic only try labtec they have headset usb mics as well that use dsp. and desktop mics. try and get one with the noise filter. one thing though, dont use windows sound recorder, its basically crap, get a third party app. there are some good free ones around.
