Cool How to know the right cpu?

Hi to all,
Sorry to jump in without introducing myself, but since i found this forum just in time before upgrading my pc, i want to ask one question. How do i know the right CPU for my motherboard? From reading previous posts I got CPU-Z program that shows all info about my CPU, but not sure if that will be any of help.
Alright - don't laugh at my cpu.. :P

seems you have a amd socket A cpu socket could be the amd xp 1200 model . socket A cpu,s are getting rare now. you can still get off ebay and selected companys off the net. i am right in thinking you want to upgrade the cpu. if upgrading the cpu , your board can take a amd athlon 3200+ maybe even a athlon 3400 or 3800 cpu, remembering that the 3200+ is the model of the cpu , not the actual speed.

sorry I made a mistake in my last post. your board can take a amd athlon xp 3200. 400 mhz fsb socket A. as i think that was the last socket A cpu they made. they then went to socket 939.

Sorry for double posting - got another question about cpu's.

Since my video card (gforce 7600gt) has AGP thingy (dunno how it's called) there aren't many motherboards that support that. So was wondering is dual core cpu good or bad (also would be nice if explained how they work)? I only seem to find motherboards with dual core or socket A (as mine is...) with AGP's.

most new motherboards now have pci-e 16, slots for graphic cards. amd x2 64bit cpu,s (dual cores) are better. for one they have cool n quiet built on the chip. makes your pc quieter and runs cooler. and with the 2 cores running side by side your pc will run faster , as the other cpu core helps share the work load. you might have to upgrade your motherboard graphics card and memory . newer motherboard are now am2 socket( 940) and use ddr2 ram only. you can still get 939 socket motherboards , but the 939 socket cpu,s are again getting harder to buy, 939 cpu,s go up to the amd athlon 64 bit x2 4800. if money is not a problem, go for a new am2 motherboard and a am2 x2 64bit cpu from 5200 upwards and ddr2 memory and a g-force card pci-e . get belarc and run to check your specs ie ram. or check on cpuz that will give you the ram you have ie ddr or ddr2 etc. your find upgrading to the specs i said will give you future upgrades on the cpu etc. also your notice the pc is so quite and your find it will run very cool. AGPx8 graphic cards are out of date now. pci-express 16x cards are the way to go.

your motherboard is 2003 so this year your pc is 5 years old. it might be worth selling it, and getting a new one. for what you will pay for a new motherboard cpu memory and graphics card you would be looking at £250 , you might as well buy the complete base unit. you can pick up a descent spec amd 6000 x2 64 for about £300 to £350 of ebay, thats brand new from any good company on there.
