Installing a CPU

I am trying to install my CPU on to my motherboard. I'm installing a P4 2.4B Ghz CPU on to an Intel motherboard. The two components are suppose to be compatable. The CPU pins line up perfectly and I have it on the way it should be. The problem is when I try to lower the lever to secure the chip it won't go down. It works fine when the chip is out. Any suggestions?

Thanks. I didn't realize how firmly you had to press. The components are so small that I didn't want to break anything. I'm new to this so please bear with me. Thank you.

as long as you know the CPU is facing the correct way and sitting perfectly level then bboy is correct just pull it down a bit firmly, remember you can break the CPu very easyily if you do this wrong so be carefull but it is pretty straight forward all the same

Another bad thing about those sloppy Socket 478 recievers, is that the heatsink puts alot of pressure on the chip. Older pentiums just had to touch the heatsink. The new ones really look as if they will break something. Ever put one on a motherboard not mounted in a case? Warps the chit out of the board. So make darn sure that the processor is seated fully. ZIF my arse! I like to put just a little pressure on the chip as I lock the lever. Sometimes they like to raise just a bit as you lower the lever. Whoever tools the 478 sockets should up their quality control! I have already bought one processor to replace a cracked core, and don't wanna do it again.
