Possible Hardware Problem

I have a Compaq Presario 1700. One day the screen just went black. There is power in the system and I hear it booting but the screen stays blank. I tried the FN plus the sunlight adjustment...nothing happens. What could be a possible problem?

Help anyone!

Well, your LCD screen might have died......in order to test that you could plug the laptop to an external monitor and start it up, if you can see it booting via external monitor then you might want to look into getting it replaced (it's not an easy task replacing LCD screen, but do-able)

Cheers

Using an external monitor will only confirm that the machine is operating. It won't prove the display is dead.

When you say black, you mean it isn't even lighting up? Does it still appear as it would when the machine is off? Or is there light but no actual display?

Can you make out anything if you look closely at the lappy screen? This could still be working, but the absence of a back light would make it look black.

Easiest fix:
Look near the lid hinges for a small protrusion, or pin that will touch the lid as you close it. This is what would normally extinguish the lamp when you close the lid. It may be sticking in the closed position.

It may be as easy as a connector that has worked loose, or it may need a new display to sort this, but to proceed will mean taking things apart. Are you up to that?
