I had ATI RADEON 9800 PRO long time ago, they lacked couple of technologies and some games went terribly wrong.

The way I see it, If your a gamer go with nVidia, if your more into GFX and video editing stuff go with ATI.

And as for myself I got a laptop with nVidia 8400 GS.

OK before everyone jumps on the NVIDIA bandwagon a) ATI is well known for their cost effective to graphic ability ratio and even their midrangle is able to challenge NVIDIA's top end cards. I think you'll see ATI knudging past NVIDIA in terms of sales. I LOVE the marketing of NVIDIA in comparison - but the HD4870 I got the other day from Notebook City just cleaned up the 9800XT - and better yet, it's a) cheaper and b) buying two and XFire their arses will then challenge the new X260/280 chipset cards from NVidia.

Nvidia makes a solid gpu that needs very little fiddling. ATI you'll need to upgrade the drivers until they get it right. That is a little frustrating for a lot of people, but I really enjoy messing with my computer, yes even drivers, so it's not bad for me. Because of that I like ATI of Nvidia, however if you don't want the hassle of keeping up with your drivers and just want to play, Nvidia hands down.
