Can I get more RAM?

Hi everyone,

I'm pretty new to all this stuff so if i could get some good advice I'd really appreciate it. I was using Everest and I was looking under motherboard, and i saw that it says that my RAM slots = 3 DIMM (if i could get an in-depth explanation of that it would really help). Also, under SPD it says that my Device Description = DIMM3 : 512 MB PC100 SDRAM. I wanted to know if I could add more RAM, and if i can, how much more.

Thanx
Memory Modules c,d 512 Megabytes Installed Memory

Slot '0' is Empty
Slot '1' is Empty
Slot '2' has 512 MB

I checked on Belarc Advisor I guess this means that i can still add more RAM in slot 1 &/or 0?

Yes you could almost certainly add more ram, but since their are a few pitfalls and you could end up with the wrong type, the safest option is to use the "Crucial" website here: http://www.crucial.com/uk/index.aspx?cpe=CHAWKuk

Click on "Scan My System" and download 'crucialUKscan.exe'

Run the file and it will quickly scan your system, tell you how many ram slots are empty, and suggest compatible ram upgrades, together with the cost direct from crucial.com

They are probably the most trusted ram suppliers on the net, and if they send you ram which is not compatible they will give you a full refund.

DIMM are the ram slots, so you can put another 3 sticks of ram in, I'm assuming the read out you got was saying 3 DiMM available.

ok, I overlooked part of your post. You can put in another 2 sticks of ram, and I would put the ram in ports 0 and 1 if you add only one stick. sometimes, if you put the ram in a "higher" port it will make your computer run more slowly.

being it is older, we can tell by it being pc100 there are a couple things to watch for.
You will have to buy PC 100 PC ram or PC 100/133 SD ram I would not buy just PC133 in case the board is not compatible, the 100/133 ram is it's self backwards compatible.
Also not knowing what board you have I would suggest buying 512mb sticks in case the bios does not recognize 1gig or more sticks. If you look up the actual specs you can see if it supports more. The older stuff like this is much more costly than the new ram types so its doubtful you will want to pay for a 1 gig strip for a older machine anyway.
Only other thing I could warn about is buy NON ECC ram, it was mostly only used on servers and most desktop pc boards do not support it.

Your other option could be using thrid party software in conjuction with external USB drive / flash drive.....that is IF you have USB 2.x on your system

third party software:
http://www.eboostr.com/download/

it works like charm for laptop / desktop with low memory.

Cheers
