Main advantages are:
Simpler to install SATA drives since they don't require any 'Slave' or 'Master' configuration with jumpers, often a confusing feature for some people. Each sata drive has it's own data cable from/to the motherboard, not one cable shared between two drives as on PATA ones.
Faster data transfer compared to PATA drives.
Data cables are round, not wide & flat. The old flat ribbon cables occupied more space and therefore restricted proper cooling of the case interior.
