Why name brand computers are slow.

Ever wonder why people with a HP, Compaq and several other brand name computers are so friggin slow? They buy these machines with huge processors plenty of ram only to find out a old pentium 3 makes it look bad.
These computers usually have software bundle garbage that can be removed from add and remove programs.
The biggest change you can make to get the speed back is a simple setting. If you have XP bring up your display properties, go to the screen saver tab and click the power button on that screen. On this window, in the power schemes option if it says Energy Star change it to Home/Office desk or always on. Click apply and OK at the bottom and enjoy the power you paid for.
For Vista you set the power options for best performance, energy saving ect.. Can set it to best fit what you want.
This fixes the issue of having for example a Athlon 64 3200+ running at 994Mhz (like I just had come in 20 minutes ago). The idea is to save power by using less power in times where your cpu isn't under heavy load, this would be a good idea if the thing kicked back in when needed. I have seen it jump back up to the full processor speed at times, more often than not it stays at 994mhz.
I been changing this setting for years when people bring me a PC and they are always so amazed how much faster it runs when I fix it then it did when it was new.

I can second ReRun on what he's saying with personal experience. The power saving settings are especially bad if you are trying to overclock. I personally like to shut off the power saving feature in the bios. The first overclock I ever tried I had the amd cool n quiet enabled and I couldn't figure out why my system was so unstable. I had a 5400+ at the time and I only had it overclocked to 3Ghz from 2.8Ghz and I couldn't get it stable until I turned off the cool n quiet feature. Once I did that I was able to get my system stable at 3.3Ghz.
