IDE vs. SATA

Need advise!

I planning to upgrade my current cd combo drive to a dvd burner but I didn't know that there's a dvd IDE and dvd SATA.

My cd and hard drive is connected to IDE. Will it cause a problem if I change my disk drive to SATA (I think the motherboard has 2 SATA connectors) but my hard disk remains in the IDE connector?

My motherboard is Biostar P4M800-M7A

Hi, you can you either sata or ide. But I would buy the ide because it is slightly cheaper and there would be little performance increase. Here is your M/B details:

Hello..
Actually I am confused between IDE and SATA because there is really no difference between IDE and SATA hard disks, except in the way they connect to the PC but I will prefer SATA only. I am using SATA hard disk on my computer and it is working efficiently wthout any kind of complains. There is no comparison between SATA and IDE so you can't choose only one.

You can use both SATA and IDE connectors in a machine, but you obviously need to make sure the jumpers are set correctly.

If I was you, make sure your HDD is connected mainly by SATA and not IDE. It should then work fine.

Apparently SATA is slightly faster compared to IDE.

Check this link out, it gives peoples opinions and various set ups that have no problems.

you can opt for either IDE or SATA. If you use IDE you will have more free ports for SATA drives where u can plugin additional hard disk. Catch with IDE is that in 1-2 years motherboards supporting IDE devices will become obsolete.
