any hot deals for motherboard + cpu combos?

Hi, i'm sorta new to upgrading hardware. I have managed to save up enough money to buy my self a new motherboard/cpu/ram. I was thinking of buying a new computer but than i'd have to wait a much longer time.
So.. i'm planning on getting a p4 2.4ghz+ or amd ahtlon 2400+
and obiviously a new motherboard (i own a HP and.. it lags and sucks on my opinon) and mayb a 512 chip of ddr ram. I'm planning to use all the other parts from my older computer.. but with a new case..

i dont know where to start.. if anyone could give me suggestions please do so.. thanks

ok with hp you will need a new case as their cases are not compatible with any other mobos but their own.

ok you know that p4 2.4 runs faster than amd 2400+
so if you want to go with p4 get that - its a pretty good deal if amd get the barton 2500+ it overclocks the best you can get it run at 2.5 or higher for a much cheaper price then p4 2.4.

for mobos for amd i would get abit nf7 for intell get abit ic7 or is7 both are good, is7 is a bit cheaper.
for ram its best to buy crusial , ocz or corsair memory - kingston memory does not always comply with most mobos.

You should go with a gigabyte motherboard they come with a lot of features and if you go with Amd which I recommend like ils.fl said is very good for over clocking. If you want performance get the Ga-7NNXP mobo or if your looking for something cheap go with a Ga-7VT600F they aren't as fast as the 7NNXP's but their not bad.

Gigabytes are fine boards, but the Abit NF7's are awesome boards.

Stay away from ECS. They are cheap and mostly unreliable.

While you are looking at processors, see what you can find for an Intel P4 2.8 Hz processor with Hyperthreading enabled. Unless you are processing large amounts of video/graphics, you will not need more than 512 RAM. Another good manufacturer of RAM sticks is Samsung [the high end Dell computers did contain that brand of RAM and may still.

Go with ASUS they have more feautures and quality parts, as far as cpu goes the 2400+ will out perform the 2.4 P4 my old 2400 outran 2.6 P4s and the cheapest place you can get good parts is Newegg.com i built a badass sustem for my friend raid and all for under 600
