adding hard drive

My computer has a hard drive, cd drive and a burner drive.
I want to add a second hard drive, the ribbon cable has places for only two devices. I understand that the second h.d. must be on the same cable as the main h.d. is this true? and if so can I buy a different cable?

you can put both hard drives od different cables, just have to set the jumper pins correctly, i would have the cd and the burner on ide2 set as master and slave, the hard drive you have now, when you add the new drive, set the jumper on the old one, master, the new drive, slave. if you try to use cable select, it may or may not work, depends on the drive and the motherboard.

Yes but not all MotherBoards have enough IDEs to go around, got to make sure you have an IDE socket free.
If that's not the case it's easier to just get a cable to set both HHDs on the same IDE with Master and Slave configurations.

ASO, a new HHD is probably going to be better and faster than the old one so making that your Master and Slaving the old drive may be the better way to go.
