second hdd in cmos only

Hi, I have recently added a second HDD in an pc running xp and this drive is recognised by the CMOS and control panel/device manager but not in My Computer. very puzzling??

What have you set the drive as ...

Primary Slave?
Secondary Master?
Secondary Slave?
Cable Select?

Which Operating System are you running?

loose - original hdd is primary master,second hdd is primary slave
, both on same cable and no more ide slots on mtherbd, os is win xp home. Hope this helps. appreciate your help!

Right Click 'My Computer' > Manage > Disk Management

If your Disk is shown on the list you can use the tools from the 'Right Click Menu'.

Let us know if this does / doesn't work.

Loose - cool, i got thro to right click in disk mgt and then i started guessing. this second hdd is intialised and online but is not listed in top pane, i assume it has got to be partitioned, but as i went thro the wizard i could not select fat32 format (i prefer) only nfts. am i on the right track?

Format the drive as NTFS and see if the OS can see it.

If yes then you are halfway there, I would definately go for NTFS rather than FAT32.

If no, you will need to post more info.

loose - the reason i prefer fat32 is that the first hdd is fat32. Also this pc is on a lan and the server is fat32. But I know NFTS is far superior but would you advise it for this second hdd?

If the drive is shared and all the other machines can read NTFS then yes.

If the drive isn't shared definately yes.

loose - all ok now , formatted and recogised as nfts, HAVE A GOOD ONE!
