maxtor hard drive problem !!
Stall maxtor hard drive 40GB.
Bios does not detect primary ide hard drive, but detect slave ide hard drive.
When in boot, the screen shows up with a error message: "Drive is not ready and the system is halted."
Sometimes when the hard drive and the primary are being detected, the computer is really slow, as in no resond from the hard drive.
No noise is coming from the hard drive or a flash of a busy signal light.
Can it be a bad hard drive? Or could it be a power plug problem ?
When installing, the new slave hard drive came along with a new ide cable so i swapped cables.
Before installing the slave hard drive, the same error message happened again with the primary hard drive.

First thing to do is to get your Master HDD working.
Remove the new data cable and put the old cable back into the system.
Remove the Slave HDD by disconnecting the power lead from the Slave HDD.
Once you have got the Master HDD working you can look for the problem with your Slave HDD.

Ok. Now it's working so far.
Master is detected. But kinda slow when bootup.
Changed the new IDE cable back to OEM system's IDE cable.
Disconnected the slave HDD right now.
Could be be overheat? Cause both harddrive mounts and just right on top of each other. No space between them 2 HDDs.

Nothing wrong with slave. Slave was detected by BIOS. But not for Master HDD.

Maxtor is not much good Hard Disk
Hello! This is Apoorva here. I found yr posting on this forum & I read the word Maxtor so I clicked on yr topic and found you are facing some issues with yr Maxtor Hard Disk. I myself once was using Maxtor hard disk but then hard disk caught bad sectors. So, I sent in for an replacement and then I purchased a new Hard Disk of another company called as Western Digital. Its a very good hard disk! I would suggest you to go for a buy back option wherein you have to give yr existing hard disk to your computer engineer and tell him that I want to purchase a new hard disk of company called Western Digital and adjust the amount of this maxtor hard disk against that new hard disk that you will be purchasing. Or, if you are not intrested in buy back option since u feel that u are not getting much return for yr existing maxtor hard disk then you can either put it on an auction sites like www.bazee.com or you can sell yr hard disk to yr friend and the amount that you get can be used in purchasing a new hard disk.
The website for Western Digital is : www.wdc.com
Anyway, Bye for now...
Apoorva.

Maxtor
I have used Maxtor drives in my systems for 10 years and never has a drive falled on me. And FYI, I have on my desk two HD that used the same parts. One is Quantom Fireball Plus AS 60 GIG. The other is Maxtor D540X-4K 40 GIG.
If there was no label on these drives, you could not tell them apart! If you like WD drives then what evers makes you happy. I don't think you should slam Maxtor just because you received a bad drive. I would like to here from all others that have not had a issue with there Maxtor drives.

slow loading of data of HD is a sign of a bad HD.i suggest to backup if you have a chance to load that HD.

yes mine caused serious slowdown, then, during a session of BF2 the game froze and the HDD made some serious clicking noises and the pc shut down, then restarted and said no OS found.
I put the MAXTOR HDD into another pc and couldn;t get the files back. I lost a lot of stuff and MESH sent me another one and it has started to show telltale signs of going wrong too. I wonder whether the drivers are incompatible or i use it too much, but i have a SEAGATE BARRACUDA running alongside the latest maxtor just in case something goes wrong. Now the maxtor is used simply for storage and no heavy use operations.
I just seem to have bad luck with Maxtor. I have never tried western digital though...

What's with you guys digging the old thread and posting your own problem on it.......before you answer a question or add your comment to it, CHECK the DATE ... this thread was started "05-09-2004" .... I think there should be a rule in place that any thread older then 365 days should be considered "CLOSED".
Cheers

Hi, If the problem occured upon installation of a new drive then you problem may just be jumpers. Remember that there are two types of cables. With old type cables jumpers must be MASTER and SLAVE (MA and SL). With newer cables jumpers will be CS (Cable Select) for both drives. If in doubt, try both type of jumpering. One should work. If CABLE SELECT works then position on the connectors determines which drive is C: and which is D:. Luck, Jim
