All windows sounds and multimedia packed up

Help!! I tried to solve a problem with microphone only recording on one channel and uninstalled the software for my Sonic Fury Sound card (Windows XP home) and when I re-installed the Sonic Fury and drivers from the maker's disk I can only get screeching and weird noises from the speakers.

If I try to run CD player or my TV card - the moment it tries to play sounds, the computer crashes and re-boots.
All windows sounds just come out as strange screeches and whistles with no normal sound at all. I have re-installed the drivers umpteen times and still nothing is working. Though no conflicts are showing in the Device manager, everything is working properly it says.

Strangely the soundcard device no longer lists as Sonic Fury but just says Santa Cruz now which is not correct.

Anyone know what's happened. Has my XP sound system gone faulty or what?

wrong driver installed perhaps? What with so many versions of Windows & so many drivers on same CD for different models, it's easily done

I've put all the drivers I can find for XP with this soundcard.
I went to the website and got down 21mb of XP Drivers for the Video Logic Sonic Fury and installed them. No cure.
I tried installing the XP drivers that I downloaded last year and they didn't cure it either.

I think the soundcard has a serious fault and is a basket case.
Trouble is until I know, I don't want to waste money on a new card. What am I going to do if I plug in a new card Soundblaster Audigy or something and the screeching speakers are still there?
I'll be heaving the whole outfit through the window !

have you tried system restore? Try going back to before you fixed the one channel recording problem.

Yes indeed I did, in fact that was the first thing I tried but I was immediately "wrong-footed" by my Windows XP telling me that it was unable to complete a system restore for any date I set in motion. I tried June 1st and one in late May and none of them would "take".

So much for system restore.
The people who make the soundcard advised I remove the drivers and power down the pc then switch the soundcard to another PCI slot and re boot then install the latest drivers for XP on that card. This I did and it made no difference.

So I am now sadly of the opinion that the soundcard is knackered. I have ordered a Soundblaster Audigy instead. But it's a gamble as it could be the motherboard at fault. However I've got to take that risk as I have no second PC to test the faulty one on. Thanks for your advice and help.
