disk read error

hi i've just turned on my main pc and received the following error:

a disk read error occured press ctrl+alt+del to restart

when i do this it says the same the hd is showing up when booting and when i go into the bios it shows in there and will auto detect size aswell any ideas anyone as i do not want to format and re install.

winxp pro
amd athlon 1.4
512 meg ram

I know your cry for help was ages ago, but this may help someone else with the same problem. Get a recovery disc which will Boot the PC into DOS, then type in either FIXBOOT or BOOTFIX at the C/WINNT Prompt. THis should repaire the damaged BOOT INI File which I think is the cause of the problem.
