Want to upgrade but

Ive built another comp but could only install a 40 gig hard drive. When I tried to install an 80 the startup window said it could'nt configure the hard drive and Windows would'nt boot. I think that the bios needs updating.
Can anyone tell me if this is the case or is it something else.

Thanks and can you keep it simple as I'm old and Technical stuff is a bit beond me.

can you open your computer case and find out what type of Mother Borad you have (it should be written on it) then we can dig out the latest BIOS for that Mother Board.
