Dvd problem

Hi guys, I wonder if anyone can help me.

When I try to play a dvd a 'failure' message comes up saying: "dvd drive not ready or drive empty".

I'm using Softdvd3 software to play my dvd's, and yes - I did put my dvd in the drive!

What's up with the damn thing?! I did have the Kroll virus, but I have got rid of that now.

Can someone please help?
