Unhappy Monitor Burnt

My monitor died yesterday giving thump noise and kind of odd smell. Fortunately the company agreed to replace it, But I was wondering if there is any problem with the driver.
I was using Omega Driver..it's been more than two weeks I guess. then there was a visual problem in Monitor..the view kind of expanded.
Then I thought a driver problem and used Nvidia 29.42 when XP rebooted, it wasn't able to initialize the monitor. I switched off the monitor and after the full reboot, I switched on the monitor..This seemed to have worked. But after sometime, the Monitor died.

Any thoughts?

If you had the refresh rate(Frequency) to high for the monitor and the HV transformer was about ready to go, that could cause it.
But generally it was the monitor that was ready to go. (Bad focus or Horizontal Output "High Voltage" circuit)

I agree with doniteli in his post, The noise and smell indicates a high voltage failure.
