unmountable_boot_volume

hie well i have a real seriouse problem i have two 40 gb hard drives the one i have my school work on started acting up,when ever i connect up to my pc an start it it keeps telling me unmountable_boot_volume i tried starting in safe mode,last good known configuration but it always keeps showing me the blue screen is there any way i could get my hard drive up an running again without loosing any of my data on it?if so please let me know
