Unhappy Can't record streaming audio with Sound card

My A7V333 ASUS Motherboard (AMD Athlon XP, Win XP Home) uses an onboard C-Media 8738 audio controller that (1) is full duplex (2) plays audio just fine (3) records from the microphone, but I can't get any streaming audio recording program to work. If I try to record any streaming audio, including something that is playing on the computer's Realplayer or Windows Media Player, I get total silence in the recording.

AAA real recorder runs a test, and then the program says I have no device capable of recording streaming audio. It doesn't make any sense.

I have tried setting the input to different settings - stereo mix, line-in etc. and increasing /decreasing the individual volumes, but nothing helped.

Any suggestions?

First off, stream recording is not related to your sound card.
It is dependant on the protocol used by the particular stream.

e.i. wmp uses mms, realplayer uses rtsp, winamp uses nsv

in other words, you need the appropriate streamripper for the stream you're trying to record.

Unhappy Sorry - my problem is slightly different

Thank you, Krusher, for your response.

I am afraid it did not help me. Perhaps I should have made my post a little clearer. The programs that I have can record anything that plays through the sound card. You can find many such programs on the net. I mean, anything - be it streaming audio from the internet, or audio that I have locally stored, and so forth. The program either saves the audio as .WAV files or encodes them on-the-fly to MP3.

I know this because I have done this countless times. My problem started after a system crash, when I had to reformat my hard drive, re-install the OS and the drivers. I thought I had put everything back where it belonged, and even got the updated drivers for the MoBo and the sound card from the manufacturers' websites. But still I am unable to record audio in the manner described.

I hope someone can help me with this.

Thanks for clearing that up datta_Kausik.
Perhaps someone else here is familiar with the software you're using.

by all means....expound away , although we're using different software and methods.

one thing i would like to point out....by recording the audio after it's been processed by the soundcard, you're losing quality

streamripper http://streamripper.sourceforge.net/
saves the stream directly to the hdd. no need for the soundcard to process it.

It seems you are confused...

the program only saves the stream to hdd without any additional processing by the soundcard..
of course you still need a soundcard to listen to it

by saving it directly to the hdd, you preserve the original quality.

hello

i know this thread is old but heres a solution in case anyone still cant record audio.

to record streaming audio/audio played by ur soundcard/audio played by winamp...

1. install the correct audio drivers for the soundcard. if you dont have a soundcard like the SoundBlaster but instead uses the onboard sound chipset then download the sound drivers for your motherboard.

2. with correct drivers, set the recording volume:
3. Start > Run and enter sndvol32 in the Run text box.
2. Choose Option > Properties. Under Adjust Volume for, select Recording.
3. In the Show the Following Volume Controls section, make sure that all devices have a check mark next to them. Click OK.
4. Click Select for the recording device that you want to use [STEREO MIX, or look below:"Digital Source", and make sure that the recording volume is at least half way up. Click Close.

-- Digital Source: If you need to record anything from sources, such as Windows Media Player, that play on your computer, Internet radio, or a digital CD-ROM drive, you will want to select an option such as Mixed Output, Stereo Mix, What U Hear, Recording Mixer, or Wave. Your sound card may have a different option, but these are the most common options that most cards have.

hope it helps.
