sound problems

I have a Gateway Laptop which was working fine generatin for generating soundas and playing music.
Yesterday, I was trying to configurate a microphone and made some control panel sound movements but it did not work at all.
I left desktop and when I came back somebody told me the computer did not play any sound or music. Somebody was listening iTunes and was working fine, but suddenly, she heard some strange noise on the phones and the sound went dead.
I tried to fix the problem with the XP help application, but nothing happened. There is some noise on the laptop speakers...just like a un-tunned radio station (only the noise) that could be a hope for not to have to replace the sound card...but I just cant get the speaker to sound any cd or music from iTunes.
Do you think is a sound card problem?
The item manager tells me there is not any problem at all with sound driver or anything.
Can I make a sound card test with DOS or with XP directly to see if there is a problem with the card?
Tahnk you in advance.

Thanks xyzabc

The speakers are integrated to laptop. So, I dont dare to open it. I just can not get any sound neither the integrated speakers nor the headphones connected in the outside.
iTunes is a music software to listen to music...just like Windows Media Player, but I think it is better.
Listen, I tried PCDoctor to locate any problem with the sound card inside the Lap Top, but I just can not get any sound from computer.
Thanks.
