Computer Will Not Turn On

Hey,

My computer just died the other day and now it won't turn back on. I have left it unplugged overnight and still no joy. I have made sure everything is firmly seated and all leads are in place still nothing.

When I first plug the computer into the mains the CPU fan spins for about 2 seconds then stops then one light remains on: DIMMLED1.

The computer just will not switch on. What hardware can cause a computer to not switch on because I think the power is there.

Many Thanks

Nope, I haven't overclocked at all.

How do I find out if it is the power supply, mobo, or processor causing this?

Cheers

turner2000, it would be hard to diagnose the problem if you don't have any spare parts..... I would start with the easy and cheapest part first... replace the power supply first (if that does not fix it, then you can return it ), then start, taking parts out of your computer 'ONE AT A TIME"..Remove the extra stick of RAM (if you have more then one, the go after, NIC, MODEM, SCSI card (If any), and finally, unplug the Floppy then CD ROM and hard drive at the end.... Please make sure you attempt to turn the computer on after every hardware change.... basically, it is process of elimination, so follow them through and let us know about it.

cheers

Did you have a recent electrical storm around the time this happened?

Does the power light on the case come on even for a split second?
Because when I plug my machine into the mains I have to wait about 10 seconds before I can press the power button because I think my psu hasn't got enough juice to power my machine immediatly.

If I don't wait 10 seconds and press the power button the light comes on for a split second then fades out, and makes a dying noise.

Snowmonkey - I haven't really got any spare parts but I am going to start with the power supply and work on from that (day off from work tomorrow!!). I'll update once I have tried that.

bbeard67 - Nope no storms around the time the computer died, at first I thought it was a power cut but everything else remained on so realised it wasn't.

Neil121183 - No, no lights come on on the outside of the case. The only light that comes on is the DIMMLED1 light on the motherboard and that remains on all the time. I have tried waiting a long time and still no joy - it's just dead

Thanks for all your suggestions - I will try some tinkering tomorrow and let you know what I find out.......

Hi, I sorta need help too. My computer is a Hp pavilion media centre pc and the problem is that it won't turn on. I think it's because of a lightning and wind storm from 2 - 3 days ago and gave the whole city a power surge/blackout. yesterday it was fine until my computer shuts down automatically and when i tried to turn it on, the power button turns on (blue) and just fades out in 1 second. i tried 2 more tiems then let the computer rest. Today, i turned it on and it shuts down automatically in a few minutes. I tried turning it back on but the light just turns on and just turns off in 1 second.
