I think I am having problems with an OEM DVD-ROM drive which came with my dell machine; about 3-4 years old. It is a dimension PIII 650 MHz machine and the drive is identified as a NEC DV-5700. I am running XP pro with SP2 installed. I have recently purchased a training guide which came on a DVD-ROM disk.
My DVD drive will not read the disk's content or let me browse its contents. However, I can access the data via IsoBuster and even extract data to my hard drive. Is this a problem with my DVD drive not being compatible with the DVD media? Is it software conflict?
I can Play DVD videos from the drive with no problems.... if it helps.
it doesnt sound like a problem with the drive, you can play movies and see the files in the disk with iso buster. being the drive is a older nec, it could just be a slow 5x pio drive. check the requirements for the software, it may run only on 8x or 16x drives.
if you could post the name of the software and the version, maybe someone or myself could look it up and see if there are any odd requirements or patches/updates that may be needed to run it.
The disk does not contain any software as such. It is just a data DVD-ROM disk. It contains A+ and MSCE training guides.
My only guess is that maybe this DVD was copied onto a media that my DVD drive does not recognise. But then I thought that DVD-ROM drives can read any format. Unfortunately, I do not think I have anyway of confirming this. My other guess is that maybe some sofware on my computer is palying havoc with my DVD drive. Is tha possible? I have Nero Ultra 6, maybe uninstall and see?
I am having a similar problem with my DVD/CD-RW Combo drive. It will read a disk made by another machine but when I put in a manufactured disk containing drivers it just spins up and then stops. I know its not the drive as I have tried another CD-RW drive and the same problem occurs and the disk is not faulty as it works in another machine.
Let me know if you find out any software issues that are causing your problem or if anyone else knows of this problem - please help!
Just a quick update to whoever is interested....
I have since uninstalled SP2 to find out, to my disappointment that my problems were not caused by SP2.
Now I just need to reinstall it…. DARN.
