Problem with CD drives/windows media player
so on saturday, i'm loading in a music cd ("actual miles," don henley's greatest hits album) into the windows media player. after copying the first 11 tracks to the music library, the 12th track starts copying and after 38 percent is done, the machine locks up. i eventually click on "stop copying," figuring there must be a scratch on the cd or something. i go ahead and load the 11 new tunes into my playlist. about this time, i get a "new hardware installed" message. "hm," i think. i then go to copy another cd (beatles "white album") and get absolutely nothing in the "copy from cd" screen. there's nothing wrong with the cd itself, and the computer tells me the cd drive is in working order, but it simply will not read any cd i put in there. the computer also idenfies the "new hardware" as a cd-rom drive. i have tried numerous reboots, uninstalls, troubleshooting, essentially everything the machine has to offer with no change in the situation.
clearly, some process involved in the lockup of the henley cd has caused this. i'm not sure if it's a windows media player problem or a cd-rom problem or if there's some "switch" in there that's been thrown to "off" from "on."
any help, suggestions, appreciated.
