Mouse Driver Problems

I'm running Windows XP on a Dell Inspirion 7500 laptop and installed a new mouse driver for an external mouse. After rebooting to have the settings saved, the external mouse, the mouse pad, and the keyboard no longer work. I tried to reboot in safe mode, but still nothing works. I can't get into my computer and I don't want to have to reinstall the operating system. I don't know what to do! If anyone can help, I'd appreciate it.

Thanks, J9

What kind of mouse, and what kind of connector, make sure you say if you are using USB to PS2 adaptor.

Mouse Driver Problems

I've tried to install a standard mouse from Microsoft as well as the Cordless MouseMan Wheel from Logitech. Both using a PS2 connector.

Could be the driver that mucked it all up. Try plugging in a USB keyboard and use it (if it works) to navigate to system restore. If that doesn't fix it, try uninstalling the external mice from the device manager (all assuming the usb keyboard works) and while you are there check to see if windows recognizes a problem with the keyboard and/or touchpad. Also, I just read on the Dell website not to use the PS2 to USB converter because most laptops send less power to the PS2 ports than a desktop and the USB devices that you plug into those PS2 ports usually ain't happy with it. Not that it has anything to do with the problem you are having, but it could save you a trip to circuit city in the future.
