blew power supply

I recently installed a new Athlon XP2000+ processor in my new Asus A7V8X motheboard that replaced my Athlon 850. When I booted up the computer everything was set to default. When Windows xp booted up everything ran fine for about 20 seconds and then I smoked my 300 watt power supply. I installed a new 350 watt power supply and now I am afraid to put the new processor back in. Do the xp processors use that much more power? It is running fine again with the 850 installed. What should I do?

I would suggest that the original power supply failed because:
A) It simply gave up the ghost. (one to many mains spikes?)
B) It was of flimsey/poor build and simply couldn't supply the rated power. (Quite common in my experience)
C) The power supply was a few years old and just failed with the extra load.

You are very lucky that nothing else was damaged.
As it's a new power supply, go ahead with the new processor, it's the only way you will know. At least you have been able to test the system beforehand.

I agree with D_C. Power supplies are an interesting bunch. When you install a new processor, a stronger processor, I've noticed that the workload of an older power supply (even a 300w) chases after the new amount of required power and fails. I've seen it happen a few times now with these high-end P4 and XP chips.
Be careful with that XP chip, though. Make sure everything has enough power to keep that little fire-breather cool or your board will be in a bit of jeapordy.
Good luck.

300w-350w i'd say is marginal for xp2000, I went from 300w (old Ath 700 ) to 550W (new Ath 1900 XP) . its usually ram that pull a lot of power , how much have you got?
