slow mouse

Recently a friend had her 'old' computer upgraded. Win98 replaced by XP. Ram still SD but increased to 340 mega. Processor is AMD à 1,5 giga. Same old keyboard and old mouse, but now mouse is slow. In the configuration setup the mouse was set at fastest speed. Mouse is still slow (useable but slow). What's wrong ? Bad connection ? Get a new mouse ?
