DVD-ROM Drive Not Working

My dvd-rom drive doesn't always rev-up when I put a game dvd-rom like Colin McRae Rally 2005 or Race Driver 2. I do have a antivirus, firewall and a spyware program and do scans about once a week and keep them regluarly updated. However if I restore my PC to factory settings the DVD-ROM drive will work with any dvd-rom,but after about one day it stops working again. Also I clean it once a week.

My PC specs:

Emachines 620 Desktop PC
2.7Ghz P4
80GB Hard-drive
DVD-ROM Drive
CD-RW Drive
3.5 Floppy Drive
Geforce 5200FX 64MB Card
56K Modem
On-board Sound
6 USB Ports

The model of my dvd-rom drive: emachines make: HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8162B and the year is 2003, also I have no new drivers nor filmware. Please help me.

Can you start the drive manualy by right clicking on the drive ? In other words is it just the auto play that is not working?

similar issue here

Hi,

I am having a similar issue but with slight difference. Mine is a DELL Laptop (Inspiron 6400). I have only one DVD/RW but under my computer it shows as two drives
Drive1 One as "DVD-RW Drive (D: )". My CD is recognized in this drive but DVD someimes is recognized (same Game DVD later will not be recognized or starts automatically). This is _NEC DVD+-RW ND-6650A. The same DVD used to work perfectly earlier and still works in other (friends) DVD drive.
Drive2 Other as "DVD Drive(F: )". I can never use this dirve. DE 1351Z BCN002E SCSI CdRom Device. I tried disabling this frive or uninstaling thi drive. But when I rebooting this comes back.

Please let me know what needs to be done.
Regards

I'm guessing it's probably getting a bit long in the tooth. Try to look at it in the trillions of revolutions and billions of head movements.

Nothing lasts forever mate, console yourself with the fact that a replacement shouldn't be too expensive.
