if you installed XP to the drive in one computer, it usually wont boot in a different computer..it's Microsoft's anti piracy measures.
as for it not installing xp when it is in the computer in question, ask these questions:
is it being overclocked?
enter the bios and load setup defaults...video caching and other settings will cause problems with installs.
If you have a boot manager...seagate drives used to come with one, that if you installed it you had to wait for it's boot options to select what you wanted to do, or it just wont work, some motherboards do the same thing.
