nVidia Gefore Ti4200 problem

Hey everyone,

I just recently purchased a Gainward 650TV Ti4200 64mb 4x AGP card. Right now, I am running a p3 800/256 ram/20gb hd. Anyways, I put in the vid card and everything seemed ok, XP booted up, noticed the card, I got the new drivers and everything was fine. So I opened up a game to check my FPS out with the new card, everything was running fine for a few minutes until my computer froze, and my screen turned into a bunch of random colors all over the place. I thought this would be my vid card because I never had this problem before. So I wait a few mins to see if it would go away, then my computer reboots itself about 20 seconds later. Anyways, to make a long story short, I tried a bunch of different combinations like installing old drivers/software etc etc. Then I wondered if maybe the card wasn't in the slot properly, so I opened up my pc and noticed the latch on the right wasn't completely on. So I got the card to go in a little more with a little push, and got the latch on. I thought this would surely fix it, so I booted up the pc again and re-installed the new drivers. I restart, open up the game, and I'm playing for a good 6-7 minutes without any problems. So I get excited, until the same thing happens again.

When I took out my old card (nVidia riva TNT2 32mb), I never uninstalled the drivers for that card when I put in the Ti4200. Could this be causing the problem? I don't think it's the power supply because the Ti4200 doesn't use any external power. Maybe the fan isn't working properly on the card?

Anyone know? Help would be greatly appreciated.

That really sounds like a heat issue, I'd check the fan to make sure it is plugged into the card and spinning. After that I'd remove the heatsink and reapply some goop (Arctic Silver, preferably) to the GPU, and see if that does the trick.

nVidia riva TNT2 32mb to a ti 4200

all i can say is that is a big upgrade. whenever you have some $ upgrade the mobo and cpu. 2x agp is a boo!

now, you are probably experience overheating. it usually doesn't happen within the first 2-3 times when its not stressed but then in games you will start to see bizare colors all over the place.

i had this problem recently with my 9800 pro. all i did was drop the stock fan and put in a new aftermarket one.

i suggest you get a arctic cooling nvidia silencer fan. it's very nice and worth the $.

just some info on it.

this is where i bought my artic cooling fan for my 9800 pro. but this link shows to the vga cooler that fits for your card.

Rita, I like the way that cooler looks. How did the surface look, did it need any lapping? Can the plastic cover come off for cleaning the HS fins?

Yes you can screw out the plastics to clean it up a bit.

The reason I am for sure you can is because for my cooler I had to do some cutting because a little centimeter of it was hitting the component on the card. So i cutted it and cleared it with ease.

Here are the compatiable info that you need to know about that cooler.

Compatibility
With this height restriction drawing you can check your VGA board for compatibility with our cooler.
First you have to check the position of the mounting holes. Then check the height of the components.

"If some components are slightly higher than our fancasing allows, you can relatively easy cut the fan casing."

To do so we suggest you first to uninstall the fancasing bottom. Then cut the bottom in the area of the component that caused the conflict and reinstall the bottom again.

We use ATIs respectively NVIDIAs standard power plugs. Asus is unfortunately not following ATIs/NVIDIAs solutions and therefore our plug doesn't fit. You can either cut both plugs and connect the wires correspondingly or you can also get 12 Volt power directly from the PSU. There you have to connect the wires as follows: black with black and red (VGA) with yellow (PSU). The yellow cable from the VGA is an RPM signal, that is not needed.

Adobe Reader:

http://www.arctic-cooling.com/downlo...bility/nv1.pdf

That PDF will basically give you measurements and etc on the cooler.
