Unhappy notebook floppy drive

Can someone help me with this issue?
I got a problem with my floppy drive. I was working properly, but one day I found out that I cannot read from or write on it.
I tried to ftgure out what is going on, I could't.
I have windows xp and when I go to hardware manager the floppy drives seems to be OK, but in practice it does not work>
what can i do?
how can I figure out the problem?

how old is the laptop?

You see it could be that the head alignment has changed

you could try to see if you can format a disk and write something to it. If you can the the drive is ok but your old disks will be problemtic if you cannot do the new disk format and write above then the drive head is prob. damaged

flopp drive prob.

well, the drive does not seem to be able to read or write old or new disks. You are probably right about the head damage . In fact, the drive passes the post as if it works properly.
There is something that i did not try yet, and that is to use a cleaning disk before changing the whole thing!!
do you think it is a reasonable idea?! Or I would've in a way or the other if the head needs to be cleaned.

Right, what Windows are you on?

Have you tried re-installing the drivers?
